The Wildcats earned their first win of the season Thursday cruising to a 17-10 victory over the Eagles of Green Mountain College. The Wildcats improve to (1-3) on the season and a perfect 1-0 at Christakos Field.
It remained a one goal advantage for nearly 13 minutes of play until Cassie Smock and Tracy Johnston put the Wildcats ahead 5-2 with just under two minutes remaining. Green Mountain continued to put pressure on first year goaltender Abigail Kortz scoring twice in the next minute to bring the Eagles within one. A late goal from Cazenovia's Jessica Cramer finished the first half scoring as the Wildcats took a 6-4 advantage into halftime.
The Wildcats came out of the halftime break on a mission scoring the games next five goals to increase their lead to seven. Daejah Werntz and Vrigian each added two goals, while Johnston scored her second of the contest during the 5-0 run. An Eagles goal to stop the run with 26:43 remaining was quickly erased by four unanswered goals from the Wildcats who lead 15-5.
The Eagles made one last ditch effort over the final five minutes of play, but it wasn't enough as the Wildcats cruised to a 17-10 victory at Christakos Field. The Wildcats outshot the Eagles 44-26 on the afternoon while also winning the turnover battle by an 11-6 margin.
The Wildcats were led offensively by Sheppard's five goals, followed by three from both Vrigian and Werntz. Kortz did her part as well for the Wildcats saving ten Green Mountain shot attempts.
Cazenovia looks for their first road win of the season this Saturday as they take on the Kangaroos of SUNY Canton at 2 pm.
