Cazenovia, NY – The women's lacrosse team ran their winning streak to five games in a row on Friday with a narrow 13-12 victory over the visiting Wildcats of SUNYIT. With the win, Cazenovia improves to (6-6, 4-2 NEAC).
The Wildcats found the net early opening the contest with three straight goals to take a 3-0 advantage. SUNYIT answered swiftly however as they countered with three goals of their own. After the teams exchanged goals, the half ended on yet another 3-0 Cazenovia run, as the Wildcats went into the half leading 7-5.
The halftime adjustments appeared to favor SUNYIT as they netted four straight goals to start the second half and took a 9-7 lead just 7 minutes in. Cazenovia came back however as they chipped away to take a 13-10 lead with just under 9 minutes remaining. SUNY answered with two more goals shortly bring the visiting Wildcats within one. The Cazenovia defense held strong over the final five minutes to secure the 13-12 victory.
The Wildcats were led offensively by freshman Kaitlin Sheppard who netted four goals while adding two assists on six shots. Seniors Jessica Cramer and Kim Vrigian and sophomore Abby Webster each netted two goals of their own in the win.
Freshman goalkeeper Abigail Kortz saved 11 shots earning her sixth win of the season in net.
The Wildcats return to Christakos Field next week on April 23 as they take on the Mavericks of Medaille College at 4 pm on senior day.
