Cazenovia, NY – The Cazenovia women's lacrosse team defeated the Wildcats of SUNYIT by a score of 16-8 on Tuesday in the teams' first round NEAC tournament matchup. Cazenovia defeated SUNYIT just eleven days prior, escaping with a 13-12 victory. With the win the Wildcats advance to this weekend's quarterfinals as they take on the host and top seeded Storm of Keuka College at 11:30 am this Saturday May 3.
It was a tale of two halves as Cazenovia held just a 4-2 lead at the conclusion of the first 30 minutes of play. Senior Kim Vrigian scored twice to lead all Wildcats while junior Daejah Werntz and sophomore Abby Webster each added a goal of their own in the first half.
Cazenovia came out on fire to begin the second half. Vrigian netted two of Cazenovia's first three goals to start the second period, and went on to score a whopping 6 in the second half alone, leading all scorers with 8 goals in the game. Caz went on a 7-2 run to begin the final thirty minutes of play, effectively putting the game out of reach for the visiting Wildcats en route to the 16-8 victory.
Vrigian's eight goals scored were a season high for the senior from Clifton Park, NY. Webster, Werntz, and senior Jessica Cramer each added two goals apiece. Werntz also led the Wildcats in groundballs collecting 12 for the game, also a season high.
Best of luck to the women's lacrosse team this weekend as coach Pacelli and the Wildcats travel to Keuka College this Saturday, May 3 for an 11:30 am matchup.
